Amazonia Cloud Forest Biogeography

Winter 2015

This is a course for students traveling to Ecuador as part of a program to document the land, people, and cultures of this Latin America nation. Students will have the opportunity to explore Ecuador using a variety of themes: cultural, geographical, natural, and sustainable. Prerequisite: BIOL 1040 or higher or ENVS 1100.

If you choose to enroll in the course, please follow these directions:

  • Complete the application and the applicable Release of Liability form.
  • Make three copies of the following: the information page of your passport, the completed application, and the completed Release of Liability form.
    • Submit one copy to the instructor (Barry Barker, Ed.D.).
    • Submit one copy to the Office of the Dean in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with your deposit.
    • Keep one copy for your records.
  • Register for the class with your academic advisor during open registration.
  • Submit final payment to the Office of the Dean in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Ecuador Assessment Information Sheet (must be picked up from the Office of the Dean prior to submitting the application) 
Passport (valid for at least 6 months following the end of the trip)

Itinerary

Day 1
Meet at Miami Airport
Upon arrival in Quito, Ecuador at 9:40 p.m., transfer to Airport Hotel

Day 2
Transfer to San Martin Zoological Gardens in Baños
3–4 hour trip through Valley of Volcanoes, traveling over Andes Mountains to cloud forest city of Baños

Day 3
Class Day
Session 1: Orientation

Day 4
Photo Census course
Session 2: Wildlife/Nature Photography
Session 3: Biogeography of the Amazonia Cloud Forest
Baños Market
Data collection and field analysis

Day 5

Photo Census course
Session 4: Geology and Geomorphology
Trip to Tungurahua Volcano
Data collection and field analysis

Day 6

Photo Census course
Trip to Puyo, plant biodiversity

Day 7
Fly from aiport in Quito back to Miami
Arrive at around 11:30 p.m.

Travel study trips often require strenuous activity that may be difficult for some students. In many destinations, special accommodations are not available. If you may require special accommodations to participate in a travel study trip, please speak with the respective faculty member to determine whether or not you should enroll in this class.
