NSU Student Media hosts industry professionals during Multimedia Conference
Event featured multiple workshops
Nova Southeastern University’s Office of Student Media hosted its Multimedia Conference on Saturday, Jan. 28. The event, coordinated by NSU Student Media Director Michelle Manley and Department of Writing and Communication Associate Professor Megan Fitzgerald, Ph.D., was an all-day affair.
“The Multimedia Conference gave me the opportunity to network with professionals in the communication industry while learning more about their careers and what they do on a daily basis,” said Jeweliana Register, a freshman majoring in communication.
Students had the opportunity to attend various workshops throughout the day with industry professionals from the local community, as well as an internship fair featuring PetMio, Gab Group, SEO Brand, City of Pembroke Pines and Vista World Link. This year’s event also featured a media professionals panel with six speakers from Redline Media, NBC 6, NSU faculty, Lifestyle Media Group and Suzanne Delawar Studios.
“The conference is something we plan throughout the year, because part of the planning involves speaking to students to find out what they want to do once they get their degree,” Manley said. “It’s a lot of work, because every year we are looking to improve and bring in new talent and professionals.”
During the conference, NSU inducted students who qualified into the Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Association Honor Society for their outstanding academic achievements. To be accepted into Lambda Pi Eta, students must be communication studies majors with at least 60 earned credit hours at NSU, a cumulative GPA of 3.0, at least 12 earned credit hours in communication major courses with at least a 3.25 GPA in those courses, and be in the top 35 percent of their class.
Next year’s conference is planned for Saturday, Jan. 27.
“We are planning some huge changes for next year, and it’s really exciting,” Manley said. “We are looking to continue this year’s success into next year’s conference, and we are trying to work with another department on campus to see if we can make this conference even larger.”
