Communication major offers students experiential learning opportunities
Internnship part of major
The newly relaunched communication major at Nova Southeastern University offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities. When students begin the major, they complete two practicum courses working with NSU Student Media and, toward the end of their major, they complete an internship of their choice.
Communication major Toussaint Campbell interned as an affiliate administrator for Cruise.com and worked closely with the director of strategic partnerships to coordinate and manage all social media profiles for Cruise.com’s Affiliate Department. He also created business copy and coordinated training sessions for affiliates.
“I didn’t have experience with the travel industry before starting my internship at Cruise.com, but all the skills and knowledge I gained from the communication major transferred directly over to the tasks I worked on,” Campbell said.
Lexi Behr served as a communication intern for the Department of Writing and Communication, where she assisted with the production of program videos, social media content and live webinars.
“This internship gave me hands-on experience that has taken my PR and communication skills to the next level,” Behr said. “I’ve never felt more confident, and I am extremely grateful.”
Joanna Ramirez interned for the nonprofit organization Arts 4 All, where she coordinated its marketing and public relations efforts. She also served as a summer intern for DWC, where she assisted with branding, graphic designs, web writing and marketing.
“The skills I’ve gained through these internships and the communication major helped me land my full-time job in public relations,” Ramirez said.
