Mellissa Carr, M.A., is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Writing and Communication at NSU's College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS). She graduated with a B.A. in English and Secondary Education from St. Joseph’s College on Long Island, New York. She completed the Multicultural Literature track of the English Master’s program at Florida Atlantic University. Currently, she is enrolled in the Composition and Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She teaches at many colleges in South Florida, and has taught online courses for the last four years.
Her teaching philosophy views all learners as capable when the information is presented in a harmonious and upbeat atmosphere. She strives to establish a friendly, if firm, rapport with the students in order to facilitate learning. If a student does not feel comfortable with the instructor or feels as if the instructor is in any way unavailable, the student will not approach the teacher with questions and concerns. This lack of trust and common understanding hinders student learning. By maintaining an open, upbeat, and helpful personality within the classroom, she is able to present herself as an instructor to whom the students can bring any question.
