DWC faculty awarded research grant

In January 2018, Janine Morris, Ph.D., assistant professor of writing within the NSU CAHSS Department of Writing and Communication, was awarded a Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) Research Initiative Grant. The grant will fund research for her cross-institutional study “Great Expectations: Discovering First-Year Writing Students’ Backgrounds and Assumptions about Online Writing Instruction.”

DWC partners with University School to create fellowship

NSU University School students who dream of a career in communication can now get a head start with the Department of Writing and Communication’s newly launched “Careers in Communication” fellowship. The fellowship, formed through a partnership between the Department of Writing and Communication within NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and NSU University School, provides select students with the opportunity to experience life as a communication major at NSU while learning about future careers in communication, including digital media production, journalism and strategic communication.

DWC hires new visiting assistant professor

Mario D’Agostino walked away from a finance degree he had nearly completed to focus on his love of writing. Now, he works as a Visiting Assistant Professor in CAHSS’ Department of Writing and Communication.

Communication major offers students experiential learning opportunities

The newly relaunched communication major at Nova Southeastern University offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities. When students begin the major, they complete two practicum courses working with NSU Student Media and, toward the end of their major, they complete an internship of their choice.

DWC hosting event with author and literacy scholar

This March, NSU's Department of Writing and Communication will host Rebecca Lorimer Leonard, Ph.D., assistant professor of English at UMass Amherst and author of “Writing on the Move: Migrant Women and the Value of Literacy.” The two-day guest lecture series, taking place Monday, March 12, and Tuesday, March 13, is sponsored by the department and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Student Government Association and will be offered to students and faculty in DWC’s M.A. in Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program.

DWC hosts "Coffee & Communication" event

On Thursday, Nov. 2, NSU’s Department of Writing of Communication hosted a fall event titled “Coffee & Communication,” bringing together current COMM majors, alumni, faculty and Deciding students for an afternoon of coffee, community-building and networking.

CAHSS Writing Center student coordinators publish article

CAHSS Writing Center Student Coordinators Samantha Epstein, Michaela Greer, Jacqueline Lytle, Morgan Musgrove and Emalee Shrewsbury published an article called “The Incredible StuCos” in the Spring 2017 issue of The Dangling Modifier, an online, international newsletter published by Pennsylvania State University in association with the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing that is written by and for peer tutors to publicize their work.

DWC presents at NSU University School’s ASPIRE Learning Lunch

On May 17, 2017, Department of Writing and Communication undergraduate students and faculty member Whitney Lehmann, Ph.D., visited NSU’s University School to speak to its high school students as part of the school’s ASPIRE Learning Lunch program. During the visit, NSU communication majors Jenna Kopec, Mike Lynn and Veronica Rodriguez represented the recently re-launched B.A. in Communication program and spoke about its new concentrations in Digital Media Production, Journalism and Strategic Communication.

DWC alumna named assistant professor at University of Central Arkansas

Department of Writing and Communication alumna Cristine Busser will be starting her next chapter this fall as an assistant professor of writing at the University of Central Arkansas. Busser graduated with an M.A. in Writing from Nova Southeastern University in 2013 and with a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Georgia State University in 2017.

CRDM alumna pursues dream of teaching in higher education

Communication students admitted into Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society

On Jan. 28, six NSU communication students were inducted into the Upsilon Zeta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. The induction ceremony, held during the NSU Multimedia Conference, aimed to honor undergraduate students who have declared an interest in the field of communication and have achieved a high level of academic excellence.

DWC alumna lands job with Zimmerman Advertising

Nova Southeastern University and Department of Writing and Communication alumna Tiara Baldoni was recently hired by Zimmerman Advertising as a traffic coordinator for its Nissan Division. In this role, Baldoni is responsible for ensuring a television or radio station has the appropriate media to advertise, as well as the instructions for how that media should be aired.

DWC appoints interim associate chair

2017 NSU Multimedia Conference coming Jan. 28

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the 2017 NSU Multimedia Conference will bring various media professionals to NSU’s main campus for a series of presentations and workshops providing opportunities for high school, community college and NSU students to develop professionally. The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in NSU’s Carl DeSantis Building and will feature more than 40 sessions on topics related to multimedia, as well as an internship fair and a media panel.

Through grants awarded by the National Council of Teachers of English, Department of Writing and Communication faculty members Shanti Bruce, Juliette Kitchens, Claire Lutkewitte, Molly Scanlon and Star Vanguri, all Ph.D.s, are conducting research during the 2016-2017 academic year that will help to advance NCTE’s mission of “improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.”
