Professional Interests

Billy Jones, Ph.D., is a professor, author and journalist. For over twenty years, Dr. Jones has been recognized for leadership and teaching excellence. For eight years, he was a high school Language Arts & Journalism teacher in the Miami-Dade County Public School System (M-DCPS). Over his career, he has served as an English Professor, Department Chairperson, Associate Dean, and Academic Dean at Miami Dade College and Broward College. In 2016, he was a semi-finalist for Professor of the Year at Broward College’s South Campus. In 2014, Dr. Jones received Legacy Magazine’s Black Educator of the Year Award as well as the 2014 Student Investment Award from Year Up Nationals, a national organization that provides early connections to critical need workforce areas for undergraduate students who come from underrepresented communities. He was runner‐up for the Association of Florida College’s Professor of the Year award (2005), Sallie Mae Rookie Teacher of the Year award winner (1998), and Teacher of the Year Nominee (2002, the latter two for M-DCSP).

As an author, Dr. Jones has published Everyday Folks: Short Stories on the Common People (I-Universe), a fictional short story collection about people who live in South Florida. His next work, Every Folks: Volume 2 (I-Universe), will be released in 2017. In 2018, he plans to publish his first poetry collection, which celebrates the various historical sites of South Florida. He is a member of the South Florida Writers Association.

As a journalist, Dr. Jones is the creator of Everyday Folks Radio, a live podcast radio network. He hosts a weekly show, BJ Speaks, which provides a forum for ordinary yet extraordinary people to tell their life stories. Recently, he has added two new shows to the network: Journey into Passion with Anika S. and Keeping Up with K-Pop. To date, the podcast network has an audience of more than 1,400 listeners.

Dr. Jones presents at local, national and international conferences. Most recently, he has presented his research at the Association of Florida Colleges regional conference and the Teaching & Survival Skills National Conference.
