Professional Interests

Gary Killam has been in law enforcement for over 32 years. He currently is the Dean for Criminal Justice & Public Safety at St. Johns River State College and recently graduated from the Florida Chancellors Leadership Seminar. He serves as the Co-Chair of the Florida Department of Education Advisory Committee for Law, Public Safety & Security, and Government & Public Administration. Previously, he was the Deputy Chief for the Duval County School Police Department and a Major with the Davie Police Department in Davie, Florida. Dr. Killam’s diverse operational and administrative experience includes 20 years at the administrative and management levels. He has an extensive background in investigations, spending over 15 years assigned to the investigative unit. Dr. Killam is recognized as an expert in the field of gangs, speaking nationally on the topic.

Dr. Killam holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern, a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (2004) in Quantico, Virginia, as well as the Southern Police Institutes Command Officers Development Course. Dr. Killam is a member of the Florida Criminal Justice Educators Association (FCJEA),FBI National Academy Associates, Northeast Florida Law Enforcement Executive Association (NEFLEA), Florida Gang Investigators Association (FGIA), Association of Florida Colleges, and Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.
 
Dr. Killam has received numerous awards including the Nova Southeastern University Distinguished Alumni Award, FGIA Inaugural “Gary Killam” Career Service Award, FCJEA Outstanding Service award, NEFLEA Outstanding Performance award, Davie Officer of the Year award, Bronze Medal for Outstanding Performance, Distinguished Service Award from Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Broward County Red Ribbon Officer of the Year award.
