Welcome

Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Writing and Communication!

You are invited to explore this site and take part in the many exciting programs we offer. Our undergraduate major and minors, as well as our graduate program, are all designed to teach you the skills you need to be leaders in industry and academia.

The department's mission is to foster academic excellence, intellectual inquiry, leadership, research and commitment to community and diversity through innovative and industry-driven academic programs in the fields of writing and communication that fuse scholarship with experiential learning to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed to become effective and ethical global leaders in the science and practice of these fields.

Undergraduate students get real world experience by working at NSU’s radio station, television station, and newspaper. They work with excellent faculty who have a combination of academic and industry experience. Students complete internships at a variety of exciting sites, take part in conferences, and participate in our honor society.

Graduate students learn about the latest in digital media, editing, layout, design, technical writing, and feature writing, as well as the art of teaching writing. Students explore research and theories of rhetoric, work with outstanding faculty on grant-funded research projects, present at conferences, and publish.

All students in the department have the opportunity to work in the writing center, which offers a variety of experiences: mentoring other students, organizing events, conducting workshops, managing social media, and more.

These programs and experiences prepare you for success in the workplace and in Master’s and Ph.D. programs. Our alumni are evidence of that!

I’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Shanti BruceShanti Bruce, Ph.D.
